Crispy Hot Honey Chicken

Crispy Hot Honey Chicken

Hot honey works best against something crisp, which is why these breaded chicken strips are coated in panko before the sweet-spicy glaze goes on. The crunchy crust, sticky honey and chili heat create a contrast that feels much more balanced than simply tossing plain chicken in a sugary sauce.

Drizzle the hot honey just before serving rather than soaking the chicken in it. That keeps the panko crisp and lets people control how much sweetness and heat they want.

Hot Honey Belongs on the Chicken at the Last Minute

  • The chicken gets fully crisp before any honey touches the coating, which prevents the crust from softening too early.
  • Panko creates a lighter, crunchier shell than a heavy batter.
  • Apple cider vinegar keeps the honey glaze from tasting simply sweet, while hot sauce and pepper flakes add layered heat.
  • The recipe works in either the oven or air fryer, so the method can match the equipment you already use.

Crisp the Chicken Before Adding Honey

The breading needs dry heat to stay crunchy, while honey adds moisture. Cook the chicken until the panko is crisp first and keep the hot honey separate until the last moment.

Build the Sauce Around Heat and Acidity

Honey provides sweetness, hot sauce and red pepper flakes supply heat, and apple cider vinegar keeps the glaze from tasting one-dimensional. Warm the mixture just enough to combine it.

Drizzle, Do Not Soak

A light drizzle keeps more of the panko crisp. If you prefer a heavily sauced chicken, serve extra hot honey at the table instead of saturating every piece before it reaches the plate.

Recrisp Before Resaucing

For leftovers, warm the chicken in the air fryer or oven without extra sauce. Add a fresh drizzle only after the coating is hot and crisp again.
